Mod 8 - Ulan West Continued Operations

"Canaries" show we are out of control, and ticking irrelevant boxes. One canary, the mandatory three yearly state of the environment report to NSW, this year, rates the health and strength of the state's ecology at 29 per cent of 1788, when Australia had 100,000,000 koalas, now barely 100,000, despite - wait for it - a universe of environment protection law, since the 1960s. Climate's best, the International Energy Agency, warning long ignored and unactioned, for emissions are still rising, and what has been put there, by the energy sector in the past, is still to reach its heat holding capability, there is no scope for any expansion of the fossil fuel sector, in a rapidly changing world of rapidly acidifying ocean heatwaves. We really are playing with fire. As a nation building project, in sunny Australia, all the nation's roofs should be plastered with panels, with back up batteries, that, interconnected / connected, becomes the grid. The climate warning is heeded and conveyed by the heavy thinker, eminent US astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, who continues the Carl Sagan tradition of making science familiar in an applied science world / civilisation, the warning about running a risk of another universe's dimensions, and way beyond humankind's capability to control, when it enters its own momentum, a like the helplessness when less than a miniscule amount of chemicals put a whole in the ozone layer.

I fully support this project as I am a current contract employee at Ulan complex. I support Glencore as they provide ongoing employment to the workforce locally and surrounding areas,
- They support businesses and suppliers with more than 920 suppliers many of them are local
- Pay Taxes, royalties and other payments that help to fund vital public services such as infrastructure, teachers, nurses/doctors and police; and
- Support local charities, not-for-profit organisations, junior sporting clubs, community playgrounds, as well as major projects such as the Mudgee 4 Doctors Initiative, Country Universities Centre in Mudgee, and the Mudgee High School LINK Program.

Without the support of Glencore Ulan Complex towards this town and the community, I feel Mudgee would suffer as a result. While there are many other occupations within the region, the majority of them are Miners, Mine Staff and their families choosing to live in this great town.

My Partner and I both have both worked for the mines, for the past 6 years. Originally from Central Qld, relocated to the Hunter Valley then moved to Mudgee. At first, I was not overly thrilled about leaving the Hunter Valley, but it has been one of the greatest decisions for my family. If the underground mines were to close there would be nothing here for us, and I feel a lot of Employment opportunities the mine offers people here others would be in the position, potentially making Mudgee follow in the same footsteps as Wellington, and this would be such a shame as Mudgee is such a beautiful town.

Mudgee needs this operation to continue for the support it receives to fund vital public services such as infrastructure,teachers,police and nurses as well as the support of local charities and junior sporting clubs, the Mudgee 4 doctors initiative

Yeah to the Mines.

I’m supporting this submission to keep our great town and surrounds viable and diverse and to support our country to have a balanced energy resource available.
Also to Provide ongoing employment at Ulan West.
Whom support businesses and suppliers – Ulan Complex spends around $470 million annually with more than 920 suppliers many of them local;
Pay taxes, royalties and other payments that help to fund vital public services such as infrastructure, teachers, nurses and police; and
Support local charities, not-for-profit organisations, and junior sporting clubs, as well as major projects such as the Mudgee 4 Doctors initiative, Country Universities Centre in Mudgee, and the Mudgee High School LINK Program to name just a few.
In 2024, Ulan Coal Complex delivered more than $846 million in direct socio-economic value.
We as a community need this expansion. Local business can’t stay profitable with just providing for tourism which is mainly weekends and holidays.

I am opposed to this project.
Firstly, this proposal should be assessed as a new project. To say it is a continuation of an existing project is a falsehood.
The project must not get approval on these grounds:-
The construction of a new tailings dam (area of 132 ha) within a revegetated, rehabilitated old open cut pit next to Goulburn River risks leakage of toxic contaminants into the waterways and environment.
This proposed mining site lies within the Murray Darling Basin and as such, threatens the water quality of the Talbragar River, which feeds, via the Macquarie River, the RAMSAR listed Macquarie Marshes and ultimately the Murray River which is already severely degraded.
Aboriginal cultural heritage and a spiritual landscape for the Wiradjuri Nation is threatened. At least 71 known sites, including rock art is in danger of being destroyed. After the Duukan Gorge catastrophe in W.A., this cannot be permitted.
Habitat of many Threatened Species may be destroyed. e.g. the nationally threatened Large-eared Pied Bat, Eastern Cave Bat, Regent Honeyeater and Koala and critically endangered Box Gum Woodland.
We Custodians of today have a moral duty to protect the natural environment. Coal mining is a degrading process and no amount of revegetation can make up for losses and damage caused. This project must not go ahead. The only excuse to allow it is corporate profits and government finance raising. Neither of those excuses stack up against the legacy of contamination; water quality and quantity loss; biodiversity destruction and cultural loss for our children in the future.

I support the project

If the mine ends the town will have a mass exodus of people leaving to chase work.

Underground mining less impact on environment and locals living in area,good for employment in districts good for local charities sports and business

Coal is the cheapest form of electricity

We need it for the workforce

Positive for the region, employment opportunities

I support the project and the jobs it creates

Strongly agree this will benefit the local comunity

This extension would extend employment opportunities at the coal mine, keep the town of mudgee populated and keep money flowing through as majority of employees live in Mudgee and spend money on local businesses in town.

Ongoing jobs and revenue into the local economy

I support this project as its continued success provides employment opportunities for a large number of families in the local Mid Western region. Glencore has consistently supported multiple local community organisations with donations. Glencore supports a large number of small businesses who are suppliers for the mine. These businesses in turn employ a large number of locals in the region. Glencore has trained a large number of apprentices throughout the life of the mine and continues to do so. I fully support this extension as it will provide a major benefit to all locals in the Mid-Western region.

I support this project. It is good for the community, town and country.

The Mod8 extension of Ulan West would be good for the community as it will continue to provide jobs for the region.
