Mod 8 - Ulan West Continued Operations

I have been following developments at this mine for a decade and feel very strongly that this latest application should not be approved under any circumstances.
The bottom line is that the NSW government should not be approving new or expanded coal projects when we are already suffering the extreme weather and disasters such as bushfires predicted as a result of the climate changes caused by fossil fuels. The economic and human cost is just too much and it is a betrayal of future generations who will suffer even more severe consequences.
This project proposal is particularly egregious due to its scale and the fact that the it is really just the first stage of a bigger expansion so should be assessed as a new project.
The increased threat to vulnerable species such as the koala and regent honey-eater are enough to reject this proposal.
The fact that economics do not stack up just adds to the case. The climate impacts of this project immediately and in the future will cost more than the short term revenue received. While jobs are often used as an argument for these projects, in this case, it is clear that they are not needed. More effort should be placed on retraining and reskilling mining workers to fill labour shortages in renewables in the local area.

ASR Recruitment Pty Ltd support the Ulan Coal Complex as it will be able to add direct socio-economic value to the local and surrounding areas. We understand that this will then allow Ulan to continue to:

-Provide ongoing employment to the local region
-Support businesses and suppliers in the local region
-Pay taxes and other payments that help to fund vital local public services
-Support local charities not-for-profit organisations

I wholeheartedly object to the expansion of the mine. I believe the expansion will irreversibly damage the surrounding environment and native wildlife habitat.

This expansion will fracture the pockets of native reserves making it harder for wildlife such as koalas and endangered species to survive. When are we going to put the benefits of the natural wilderness of this region above the profit for larger corporations and power hungry individuals.

The underlying purpose is to facilitate a much larger expansion that would surround the village - plus of course, the usual habitat destruction, loss of Aboriginal culture, noise, dust, vibration lighting etc - all next door to Goulburn River National Park and Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve!

Ulan Coal is an extremely valuable asset and operation, supporting the local economy and the community.

Ulan West has provided workload for my company employing 65 staff in the Mudgee and Newcastle areas. The work has been engineering based with the purpose of upholding high reliability for their equipment, and safe function to protect their people. The work is considered high skill and has been attractive to many people with a technical mindset. We are also able to engage with young people straight from school and give them safe exposure to the mining industry and to develop beneficial skillsets. Some of this work occurs in Newcastle as the equipment from Ulan West is sent there for repairs and overhaul. I consider the current management cohort at Ulan West to be responsible and capable in running the operation safely and profitably.
Extending the life of this operation to capture this valuable resource is a good decision for the local economy, and the national economy.

I support this project as a local living in Mudgee it’s a thriving town and to see majority of the population working in mines it would be beneficial for the community to have an extended mine life of ulan west to bring more to the community and town and its longevity

As a local Mudgee resident, I strongly support Ulan Coal Modification 8. The continuation of Ulan Coal’s operations represents a significant opportunity for sustainable economic growth, job creation, and community benefits in the region.

The Ulan Coal Mod 8 project demonstrates a commitment to responsible resource management, with careful consideration of environmental safeguards and community engagement. The project is poised to deliver long-term employment opportunities, boost local economies, and will support our state and country's transition to an alternative energy future, should the government wish to continue on this alternative path.

Furthermore, Ulan Coal has consistently demonstrated a dedication to best practices in environmental stewardship, social responsibility and is a low emission mine. The proposed modifications will ensure that mining activities continue with minimal impact on the surrounding environment whilst support local employment needs.

Quarry Mining is a long term supplier to Ulan West and like many other SME's relies on coal mining for the prosperity of its business, most importantly our capacity ensure long term employment of skilled tradesmen, TA's, technical and business adminstration staff. The longevity of coal mining in Australia is of course critical to our economy. To have a company like Glencore, who are dedicated to world class environmental and sustainability standards operating these mines is a supreme advantage. Their operations create safe jobs for many people not only through direct employment but also through deliberate efforts to involve local suppliers of high quality offerings of the many and varied products and services that are necessary to operate a coal mine. The jobs that result, and even attract others from regions afar, indirectly allow local business not only to exist, but to grow and improve and continue to ensure Australia as a world class economy.
I am particularly passionate about the sustainability of, and pathways to, skills excellence in our communities. Without a robust mining industry, regional Australia will lose their youth and their skills to the large centres or worse, offshore, contributing further to the loss of manufacturing in our country.
For Quarry Mining alone, Ulan West Underground supports the equivalent of approximately four full time employees.
As would many SME’s connected with the mine, Quarry Mining supports various community initiatives in this area. Also worthy of mention is the that of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service support initiative, whereby Quarry Mining provides a drill bit (the Angel Bit) used in high volumes underground, a portion of whose profits contribute approximately $15,000 per year back to the helicopter service. Glencore’s support of this product makes that ongoing donation achievable. This is now in its sixteenth year.

The economic and social benefits of expanding the mine are of huge importance to the local community. The number of direct and indirect jobs and the contribution Glencore makes to the community are extremely important for the long term sustainability of the region.

It is becoming clearer that renewable energy projects are having negative impacts on the environment and social fabric of communities. We can’t afford to stop coal production who have experience in managing offsets etc. while renewables is all an unknown.

I support this project as it will not only support jobs within the community but within the state.

I support this expansion as it will keep jobs in Mudgee and support a long future locally for younger generations. Glencore support sporting groups and community groups which make life better for a lot of people.

we service a number of mining sites throughout western nsw from hard rock west of dubbo , to the coal industry in the east
As a small family owned business we have found that these sites have been supportive and helped us grow our business in many ways ! . with ulan west being highly supportive of keeping work local and encouraging us to invest in equipment and staff.
we have been able to attract staff and train apprentices hired locally from families we know and respect and give their children a trade and opportunities to learn specialised work. These skills will put them in good stead to follow a career in techinical trades wherever they choose to venture .
The job security , long term planning and business viability based on these decisions does not just affect mining sites , it affects families and small enterprises within hundreds of kilometers from site.
As such small business and local families rely on large ongoing projects such as this to proceed !

We are a plant and equipment hire company that does business with Glencore at Ulan West. This business activity supports 1-2 FTE roles. The extension of Ulan West will allow us to continue to have business justification for these roles.

I am currently employed at Ulan Coal Mine and fully support the proposed Mod 8 expansion. The project will secure ongoing jobs for local workers, strengthen the regional economy, and make the most of existing mine infrastructure.
Coal mining remains a vital industry for our community, providing reliable employment and contributing significantly to Australia’s energy needs and exports.
