Mod 8 - Ulan West Continued Operations

I support the project. I believe the benefits of the jobs, royalties and investment in the region are critical to the future of the area.

I strongly object to this proposed expansion and request that the project be withdrawn. The recent overturning of the Ulan Coal Mine Mod 6 approval by the NSW Land and Environment Court clearly shows that cumulative environmental impacts in this region have not been properly or lawfully assessed. Until these systemic failures are addressed, no further coal expansion should proceed. No doubt the miners will bleet about jobs and the contributions the proponent make to the community, but enough is enough at Ulan, Wollar and the surrounding region. A strong transition plan away from coal needs to be realised by the region.

This proposal presents unacceptable risks to the Goulburn River. The 132-hectare tailings dam planned beside the river creates a real possibility of toxic leakage, yet there is no downstream heavy-metal monitoring to detect contamination. Extending the mine for another six years would also add more than 30,000t of salt to the river through ongoing mine-water discharge, and the combined salinity impacts from multiple upstream mines still haven’t been assessed. Basic hydrological monitoring is missing, with no flow gauge between the Coggan gauging station and the mine sites, making it impossible to understand real impacts on the river system.

The expansion also prolongs significant community impacts. Another six years of production means up to ten coal trains a day will continue to run on the Sandy Hollow line, causing ongoing delays for road users and increasing noise impacts for residents. At the same time, extreme weather events—such as the washout of the Wollar Creek crossing on Mogo Road—highlight the growing social and economic risks.

Given the environmental threats, lack of monitoring, ongoing community disruption, and the Court’s clear finding that cumulative impacts in this region have not been properly assessed, this project should not proceed. I urge the Department to reject the proposed expansion.

This would be great for the Mudgee community. This project will allow more employment opportunity's the Mudgee people not only at the mine but also the local supporting business

I strongly object to this project which is so close to the Goulburn River and in the Murray darling catchment.
With 71 known Wiradjuri sites in the area, expanding a fossil fuel coal mine which is contributing to climate change and GHG emissions appears desperate and foolhardy.
This should be assessed as a new project with all the rigours that involves.

This project would maintain the jobs of many locals, create new jobs for young people, and support the local economy.

Mod 8 will help ensure the ongoing stability, economic contribution and community well-being in the Mid-Western Region. The Ulan Complex has long been a cornerstone of employment, local investment, and regional development. Mod 8 enables this positive contribution to continue well into the future.

Mudgee and Gulgong will perish quickly if mining is terminated in the region.
Underground mines have a minimal impact on the local ecosystem in the area and disturbed areas quickly regenerate.
The town requires the mining operations to thrive, and this extension will aid the town and help prevent a downturn that ruins the region

I support coal in our region because it continues to play a vital role in sustaining local jobs, supporting families, and contributing to the stability of our regional economy. The industry also underpins essential services and infrastructure, and its presence helps maintain strong community growth while we work toward a balanced and reliable energy mix for the future.

I am in support of the Continued Operations (Mod 8) at Ulan West Coal Mine due to the employment opportunities this not only provides but continues to maintain for existing employees. The workforce associated with the Mine contributes to the support of local businesses and suppliers and with continued operations, there is continued community funds that may be available from the Mine to support the local community and sporting clubs.

The Ulan Coal Complex (UCC) and more specifically, the Ulan West mining operations is a major contributor to the local Mudgee community in terms of economy, jobs and future prosperity. They employ local people, support local businesses and give back to the community via charitable donations, organisations, and affiliations with community groups. Ulan West uphold the highest standards in terms of safety in mining, automation, technological development, and support for their employees and contractors. Additionally, they are a responsible miner in terms of environment and sustainability, proven by their completed and ongoing land rehabilitation programs and sensible mine planning. I fully support this proposal as a two-decades long contributor to the industry, an end user of its products, and staunch supporter of Australian coal mining and the prosperity it provides to all Australians.

This project will provide the Mudgee area with sustainable employment and deliver economic growth for the region.

It is a safe, environmentally responsible plan that provides any hundreds of jobs to the region as well as the vital resources we still need to operate as a developed country. Review the positives of this plan and the record of work at Ulan West and I’m sure you will come to the same conclusion - this plan should be approved.

I am currently employed at Ulan Coal Mine, and have relocated my family and live locally in Mudgee this was all possible due to the Coal Mine. I fully support the proposed Mod 8 expansion. This project represents an important opportunity to secure long-term employment for local workers and maintain the economic stability that our region depends on. The expansion will allow Ulan to continue operating efficiently by making better use of the infrastructure and systems that are already in place, ensuring the mine can remain productive and competitive for years to come.

Coal mining continues to be a vital industry for our community, providing dependable jobs, supporting local businesses, and contributing significantly to Australia’s export market and energy supply. Ulan has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to safe, responsible, and environmentally conscious operations. I believe the Mod 8 proposal reflects the same high standards and will help provide certainty for families and businesses who rely on the mine’s ongoing operation.

For these reasons, I strongly support the approval of this modification and see it as an essential step in protecting local jobs, strengthening the regional economy, and sustaining the long-term future of our community.

The proposed extension of the underground mine to the west, including the addition of four new longwall panels, presents a significant opportunity for both economic growth and community development. By extracting an additional 38Mt of coal, the project would create more jobs, boost local businesses, and increase tax revenues, all of which could contribute to the region’s long-term prosperity. If executed with stringent environmental safeguards, including measures to minimize land disturbance and reduce emissions, the extension could ensure that the environmental impact remains minimal while maximizing the benefits for the community. However, balancing these short-term advantages with a long-term vision for economic diversification and sustainability will be crucial as global energy markets continue to evolve.
